The story behind the Bessie
The Bessie was one of the very first handbags designed for Lyne Juline’s debut collection. Its story was born from travel, architecture and everyday life.
At the time, I often travelled to Austria and visited many castles. I was fascinated by their architecture, their lines and, above all, their majestic doors. Those memories inspired one of the Bessie’s most distinctive details: its front pocket, designed to evoke the shape of a castle door.
But at Lyne Juline, a detail is never purely decorative.
This pocket was also designed with a very simple everyday need in mind: keeping essentials within easy reach. A few coins, a card, a ticket… especially in those moments when everything needs to move quickly — at a ticket machine, a toll booth or the supermarket checkout. Instead of searching through the bottom of your bag, simply open the pocket, slip in what you need and continue on your way.
The name Bessie pays tribute to the spirit of Bessie Coleman, a pioneering aviator. Faced with barriers that prevented her from learning to fly in the United States, she chose to travel to France to pursue her dream, earning her international pilot’s licence in 1921. A bold and determined woman who chose to forge her own path.
The Bessie brings together several stories: memories of Austrian castle doors, functionality inspired by real life, and the spirit of a woman who dared to forge her own path.
